読み始めはなんだかなー・・と思っていましたが、途中から加速する面白さ。
最近あんまりベタベタに書く事がなかった、ユートピアがまたどどーんと復活してます。科学万能主義も気持ち良いぐらいに直球ど真ん中です。

今回の見所は、グレッグ・ベア級の大破壊ですが、ホーガンらしくないシチュエーションにもかかわらず、全体的には初期の頃に見られた骨太な雰囲気がしっかり復活しています。

解説にもあるように、ネタ元になってる理論がトンデモなのにもかかわらず、(いくつかおかしな点はあるものの)きっちりそれっぽい説明をつけて、いかにもこんな世界があり得そうに思わせてしまう力量はさすが。「トンデモ」が「事実」である世界で、既存の仮説に固執する科学者たちを愚かに描くことを通して、ホーガンの科学への愛がひしひしと感じられる作品になっている。これぞまさにホーガン(←つまり、政治関係の描写には目をつぶれ、ということ)。

ところで「ホーガン」で「三部作」と言えば、衝撃的だったデビュー作「巨人たちの星シリーズ」だが、あれは毎回「これですべて解決!」と思える結末が、次作でみごとにひっくり返されるのがカタルシスだった。このシリーズも三部作らしいので、このあとがどうなるのか楽しみでならない。

普段はSFは読まない人間ですが、「断絶への航海」を読んでから、ホーガンの作品には親しんできています。ハズレもあったけれど。
個人的には、今回はアタリでしたが、「断絶への航海」で最初のうちはなかなか理解できなかった人と人が信頼だけで生きる世界を理解できるかが、この本を愉しめるかどうかのポイントかもしれない。
三部作ということで、このあと地球にもユートピアができるかもしれないが、手に入れることができるなら、是非「断絶への航海」を読んでからお読みください。4/5はわかりにくいが、最後の1/5で氷解する本でした。
