　“巨人”シリーズ第四作。　ホーガンが　「論理的整合性」　を持った　“ファンタジー”　を目指したという作品。　その結果は…　「整合性」　を重視するあまりに、三部作特有の限界ギリギリ、今にも崩壊しそうな所での　“ツジツマ合わせ”　というおもしろさ、無茶さが薄れ、無難なところで上手にまとまってしまっている。

　人付き合いがうまくなった、ちょっとお茶目なダンチェッカーや、地球人に影響され大胆になってきた巨人達も、どことなく物足りない。　「あの頃は良かったなあ…」　と思いつつ、　「あの本を読んでいなければ…」　と思わずにはいられなかった。

ガニメアンシリーズの最終話。
前作の架空戦争で敗北を喫し、ガニメアンの管理下になった惑星ジュヴレン。平和に向けて進んでいるのかと思いきや、ジュヴレン人の中では妙な新興宗教が次々に発生しお互いに対立を始めた。対応に苦慮したガルースは遥か地球の友人ハント博士の助けを求めた。かくしてハントはダンチェッカーとともにジェヴレンへ赴く。

シリーズ初期の頃はこれ以上ないというほど純SF作品だったが、だんだんリアルな科学検証のシーンが減ってエンターテイメント色が濃くなってきた。だから作品が面白くなくなったかといえば、全くそんなことはないが、毛色が変わってくるのは「星を継ぐもの」ファンとしては少々寂しい気もする。

今作では宗教や種族の溝が事件のきっかけになっている。ガニメアンは相互理解を深めようといろいろ手を打つが、ジェヴレン人には全く通用しない。両者の間には根本的な世界観の違いがあって、それが大きな障害なのだが、お互いそんなことは知る由もなくただ不満を募らせるばかり。なんだかそれってどこかで聞いたような話だ。読みながら、現実に起こっている世界各地の紛争に考えがいってしまった。地球人同士だって理解しあうのは並大抵のことではないのだから、宇宙人でしかも争った過去があり現在権力的に上下になっていれば、いくらガニメアンが温厚な種族といったって無理がある。ジェヴレン人は何やらよからぬことを企んでいるようだし、下巻で話がどう転ぶか楽しみだ。

ちなみに人口頭脳ジェヴェックスの幻想を体験したいのだが、これって現実逃避だろうか…。

まだ下巻は読んでいない。前作で完結していたと思っていた著者も、読者の強い要望に支えられて物語を再始動させる。上巻はまだ「序章」という雰囲気である。「仮想世界」がもたらす可能性と危険性については、映画界においては「マトリックス」シリーズをはじめ、いろいろな試みがなされている。この作品はその端緒を創ったものとして重要なのだろう。今から１４年前、果たしてどこまで描かれているのだろう。興味津々である。
