この作品はハードＳＦとして紹介されていることもあって、苦手な人は敬遠していると思う。私もそうであったのだが、読んでびっくり、長編ＳＦ小説の中でもベスト１０級の面白さ。
無駄な部分が無く、一気に読ませる。最後までぐいぐい引っ張る謎と、驚きの解明。
登場人物の魅力もあり、設定や科学的な古さも感じられない。
ＳＦ好きで、いえ、全ての読書家の方々へ、まだ読んでない人は損してます。

　人類の起源について想像を絶するような仮定を本格ミステリの要素をふんだんに盛り込んで編み上げたハードSF巨編です。私はSFというものはあまり読みませんし、かりに読むとしてもファンタジーの要素の強いもののほうを好むので、この作品のようにハードSFとよばれるジャンルのものはほとんどお初といってもよいと思います。そんな私にこの作品は、人間というのは果てしない想像力を備えた偉大な生き物なのだということを感じさせ、脳髄がしびれるような心地よい読書体験を与えてくれました。

　そしてぜひ指摘しておきたいのは、翻訳を担当した池央耿氏の類いまれなる能力です。氏が巧みに操る日本語は天下一品。翻訳小説では時に読書の流れを止めてしまうようなつたない訳文に出くわすことがありますが、池氏の訳文は実にわかりやすく、また文学的な美しさに彩られています。翻訳小説というよりもこの作品がそもそも最初から日本語で書かれたかのような錯覚に陥ります。お見事としか言いようのない仕上がりです。これだけの英語翻訳が出来るのは今の日本では柴田元幸氏か池氏くらいではないでしょうか。

　このすぐれたSF作品が池氏のようなすぐれた翻訳家と日本で邂逅したというのは、まさに天の配剤としか言いようがありません。そしてその日本でこの本が読めたことに感謝したいと思います。

謎解きの楽しさと理路整然としたストーリー展開で読者を裏切らない優れた作品だと思いました。あなたも、読み進むうちに自分なりの謎解きとホーガンが用意したストリーが抜きつ抜かれつし始めるのを体験することでしょう。そしてラストを迎えたとき、あなたの推理はホーガンを捕らえているかどうか。ぜひ読んでで試してください。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　ちなみに、派手なアクションもヒーローも出てきませんし、イカのような侵略者も出てきませんからそちら好きの人には物足りないかもしれませんが、２００１年宇宙の旅のような、スケールの大きさが楽しめるでしょう。
