相変わらずの超絶技巧で描かれる、異世界ネーウォンの物語第四弾。作品リストは…
「魔女の天幕」1970（書き下ろし）

「クォーモールの王族」1964
相変わらず格調高い浅倉訳も最高です。今回は“Swords against Wizardry”という原題からも判るように、テーマは「魔法」。
神々が星々を天空に打ち上げたという最高峰スタードック制覇を目指す「星々の船」。自然との戦いがメインですが、魅惑的な魔法種族が真白き世界に透明の彩りを与えてくれます。猫好きのライバーならではの魅力的なペット、雪猫のフリッサも愛しくなります。
手に入れた魔法の品をめぐる、盗賊たちの物語「ランクマー最高の二人の盗賊」では、いつも二人を悩ます例の魔法に爆笑。
そしてマーヴィン・ピークの『ゴーメンガースト』や、コンピュータゲーム『Wizardry』を彷彿させる地下に広がる果てしない迷宮世界の王位継承譚「クォーモールの王族」。ライバーの『妻という名の魔女たち』よろしく繰り広げられる魔法合戦は、久々にどろどろとした陰鬱な世界を見せてくれます。外の太陽のまぶしいこと！

今回はまた、たくさんの女性たちが二人を悩ませます（いつものこと？）。外見も人間ではなかったりする女性たちが、たまらなく悩ましげに描かれるのも楽しみのひとつでしょう。もちろんスタードックやフリッサも含まれます。
読み終わるのがもったいない一冊です。
第五巻でシリーズも終わり。あと一冊かぁ。

　それぞれが異なる相手に雇われ、互いに剣を交わすファファードとマウザー。もちろんどちらも死ぬはずが無い。この世界には強い予定調和が働いているのだが、それでも楽しく読めてしまうのは、どうやって二人が無事に済むのかという仕掛けが見通せないからだ。良い意味で読者を裏切る、それでいてお約束はしっかり踏んでくれるという絶妙の展開。
　流麗奇怪な描写を味わいつつ、おっとそうきたかとか、わははやっぱりとか思いながら、じっくり読める物語は良い。

　いやー、すんません。シリーズ復活を今更ながら知りました。で、読んで感激。このコンビの下世話さは、「剣と魔法」ものとしては異色です。アニメっぽいというか、マンガっぽいというか、キャラクターの軽さに好感を持ちます。「剣と魔法」ものにつきものの運命とかと無縁ですもん。
　「剣と魔法」ものにつきものの宿命とか運命とかに縛られない自由さが、最大の魅力だと思います。
