ホラーブームの今日、お子様向けの下らないホラーには閉口しています。しかし、ここに集められた作品はやや格が違います。純文学の畑でも一流に近い扱いを受けているジョイス・キャロル・オーツをはじめ面白かっただけでは終わらない作品群です。

ホラーの第三黄金時代を築くという壮大な目的をもったアンソロジー第１巻。小難しい作品が多い。怖くないのはモダンホラーの名残か。

面白いのは、キム・ニューマン「モスクワのモルグにおける死せるアメリクァ人」だけ。
（次点は、ジョイス・キャロル・オーツ「コントラカールの廃墟」、トマス・Ｍ・ディッシュ「フクロウと子猫ちゃん」）

■「モスクワのモルグにおける死せるアメリクァ人」
アメリカから、旅行者を装った自殺志願者により、ソビエト連邦に持ち込まれた細菌兵器は、ゾンビ＝アメリクァ人を増殖するための細菌兵器だった。
モスクワの死体置場で、あるものはアメリクァ人の標本研究を、あるものはラスプーチンの頭蓋骨から人体の復元ををおこなっていた　・・・

その他の作家は以下のとおり。

ホラーだけを集めたなかなか面白いアンソロジー。
長いものもあればちょっとした文章もあり
おどろおどろしさで読者を楽しませてくれます。


ただし、残念なのは
短すぎる作品に言えることなのですが、
オチが何を伝えたいのかまったくもって
意味不明なのが数点まぎれてしまうこと。
何気ないのですがこういう作品がまぎれていると
読書欲がそがれてしまいます。


しかしながら、著者リストには
豪華な人が混じっていて、その作品は
最後まで息をつかせぬすばらしい展開をみせてくれるので
非常によかったなと感じました。
