ジョーンズの物語には「旅」が多く登場する。しかも徒歩や馬車といった、前時代的な旅である。
この本も、町から町へと渡り歩く吟遊詩人の家族の話だ。
いつも自分をみそっかすだと思っている、11歳のモリルが主人公。
父親で吟遊詩人のクレネンが、キアランという少年を馬車に乗せてくれるように頼まれたことから事件は起こる。
父を殺され、母は昔の婚約者のもとへ。
兄ダグナーも捕まり、モリルは姉ブリッドと共にキアランをハナートに送り届けることができるのか？

相変わらず大人も子どもも動物も、個性豊かに描かれている。
微妙に揺れ動く少年の心も、きっちりことばにしてある。
その視点もとてもジョーンズらしい。
今までに翻訳された作品よりも、読んでいて振り回される印象は少ない。
初期の作品ということもあるだろうが、その分ドタバタも少ないので、
ひねったものが読みたい方には物足りないかも。
逆にジョーンズ初心者という方には、格好の入門書となりそうだ。

巻末のデイルマーク用語集を読むと、本書の疑問が解けるだけでなく続巻がますます楽しみになってくる。
モリルが旅する世界も、わたしたちが旅する世界も、ひとつではないようだ。

　1975年に出た『Cart and Cwidder』の翻訳。「デイルマーク王国史」４部作の初編に当たる、ダイアナ・ウィン・ジョーンズの比較的初期の作品である。
　物語の舞台となっているデイルマークは、自由な北部と圧制の南部の対立する国である。主人公は吟遊詩人の少年で、彼が「うた」の力を手に入れるまでが本書のストーリーとなる。
　序章としては上々の出来だろうと思う。謎めいた始まりから、次第に物語が展開していき、盛り上がりも充分。この先どうなるのだろうとワクワクさせられる。
　ただ、初期の作品ということもあってか、あんまり著者らしい物語ではない。おふざけが少ないし、ストーリー展開が一本道。
