アンソロジーの品揃えは、初訳出が多いので、その意味では楽しめます。私は、各話冒頭の著者の紹介に続く(←この部分は必要)、多分訳編者による解説が、解説になってなく、とてもとても個人的な感想文のように感じて(そして意味不明も多く)、各話読み進む度に萎えます。これから読む方には、解説部分は後回しにして、本文のみを先に読んでしまうことをお奨めします。

日本では、イギリスの怪奇小説のアンソロジーが無数に出版されている。そのため、未紹介の佳作を探すのが次第に困難になりつつある。本書では、これまで知られていなかった（怪奇小説家とは見なされていない）作家の作品を翻訳することで、この窮状を脱しようと試みている。しかし、残念ながら失敗に終わっている。怪奇小説とは言えないような作品が並んでしまっているのである。
　たとえば、詩人として高名なディラン・トマスの「祖父さんの家で」。まったく無名のエイミアス・ノースコートの「オリヴァー・カーマイクル氏」。どちらも不思議な話ではあるが、恐ろしくはない。
　一方で、著名な怪奇小説家の未訳作品でも失敗している。ブラックウッドの「囁く者」、ホジスンの「失われた子供たちの谷」。主要な作品は既に翻訳されているため、良くない作品しか残っていないことがはっきりしてしまった。
　日本人が要求するほど、イギリスの怪奇小説は数がないのである。コンセプトを変えて、ちょっと変わった話として紹介して行くしかないのではなかろうか。

怪奇礼讃とあるから、楽しみで買ったのですが期待はずれです。恐ろしくも無く、意図はわかるが楽しませるファクターの無い短編ばかり並べて・・・。あげくにこの価格。　こういう「りっぱな題」を本につけるのなら、もっと本格的な怪奇物の編集をお願いします。
