Carroll2作目は彼の全作品中で最も怖い作品だ。

主人公は子供の頃に誤って兄を死なせてしまうが、その事を自分だけの秘密として隠し、心の奥底に恐怖の記憶として残したまま大人になる。
そして兄とその友人をモチーフに描いた小説が映画化され有名になってしまう。

仕事目的で訪れたウィーンで、映画好きの魅力的なカップルと知り合い、交友を深め、心を開いていく主人公に子供の頃の罪悪の記憶が現実の悪夢の形で襲いかかる！

この作品は他のCarroll作品と違って、あくまで主人公の罪の意識が生み出した心理的な恐怖なのか、現実に超常現象が起きてるのかの判定も微妙で、登場人物のキャラクターの意味つけも精神学的にも面白いです。

ラストの畳み掛ける恐怖のドライブ感は凄まじい。

ジョーは小説家。ロスという兄がいた。ロスは、5歳の時にはすでに大変な悪童だった。15歳になるとチンピラにイメージ、チェンジした。世の弟たちが大抵そうであるように、ジョーはロスのからかいの対象、カモだった。しかしもうロスはいない。自分が殺したから。いいや！あれは事故だった！、、、、インディアとポール、かけがえのない親友。しかし別れの時は来る。おぞましい形で。全て自分の招いたことなのか？

キャロルの最低の小説。衝撃のラストではだれもが首をひねることだろう。間違いない。
