１５年以上の歳月を経て、ようやく最終巻刊行。その内容は、初期作品に夢書簡。しかもよそでは見られないようなものばかり。その前評判につられて購入したわけだが、最高につまらなかった。特に訳のしょぼさが目立つ。関係文を２つ以上重ねたと思しきオリジナル文を、何も手を加えずに直訳したり、アラビア語の固有名詞を変に英語のリエゾンなんかつけて訳していたりと、読んでいてかなりストレスを感じた。
そしてきわめつけに、あとがきでこちらが聞きたくもない訳者の弁解じみた制作秘話を拝まされるんだから、たまったもんじゃない。この１５年で、訳者の英語力と日本語力は確実に低下していっているようだ。仮に、ラヴクラフトが存命であれば、オリジナルの良さを完全に台無しにしてしまった翻訳者に、鬼の形相で「ティンダロスの猟犬」を差し向けている事だろう。

　16年ぶりに出た第７巻。
　13の短篇と、初期作品が５篇。さらに友人知己に書き送った夢・妄想的想像が「夢書簡」と題してまとめられている。ハリー・フーディニ名義で代作した「ファラオとともに幽閉されて」など、貴重な作品が収められている。
　私にとってもラヴクラフトを読むのは16年ぶりだった。初期作品や断片、書簡なども含まれているということで、あまり期待せずに読んだが、まあ、悪くはないだろう。クトゥルー神話も入っていないし、良作と呼べるものも見当たらない。しかし、ラヴクラフトの雰囲気は感じ取れる。出版には感謝する。
　それにしても翻訳がひどい。原文に忠実な態度はわかるが、日本語としてどうか。
　一般人にはつらい一冊だろう。

ラヴクラフト全集の刊行は１９８９年の６巻で中断していたが、やっと
最終巻が出た。特に「夢書簡」や初期作品などファンが読みたくなる
ものがそろっている。これでラヴクラフト全集は３０年過ぎて完結
したが、惜しむらくは「文学における超自然の恐怖」というラヴクラ
フトによる恐怖文学論が全集に含まれていない。こういう悔いを残し
ながらまた新しいラヴクラフトの選集が編まれるのだろう。
本書にはダンセイニ風の作品も含まれているが、ダンセイニを読んで
本書を読めば、ラヴクラフトの独自の地平の広さを知ることになると
思う。
ラヴクラフトはクトルー神話を遺すためにこの世に生まれでた人だ。
