巷にあふれるすべてのドラキュラ物の原点となる作品でありゴシック的な重厚な雰囲気を感じさせる。作品はすべて複数の人々の日記形式でかかれており、それでいて引き込まれてゆくようなひとつのストーリーを形成していてとても読み応えがある。吸血鬼物のバイブル的な作品であり吸血鬼好きにはぜひ一読をお勧めする。

ドラキュラ物の原点中の原点であるこの作品。物語の本質はドラキュラの恐ろしさではない。
未知の脅威を前にしても人間は地に足をつけて誠実に、そして前向きに対処しなければならない。
そして人間という無力な存在の底力が発揮されるとき神は決して人間を見放さない。
これはホラーではなく人間賛歌の物語である。

登場人物の心理描写が丁寧なので物語の展開が遅い。
そこがこの小説のよいところ。

まさに「ドラキュラ」の原点です。
なぜ「吸血鬼」の原点と表現しなかったかというと、「吸血鬼」自体は本書が執筆される以前から、伝説などで存在していました。

ですが、後に映画をはじめとする各種メディアでの「吸血鬼」や「ドラキュラ」は、まさしくここから始まったのだと言えると思います。

ドラキュラの名前を知らない方は、誰もいないと思います。しかし、ドラキュラの起源を知っている方はかなり少ないと思います。

吸血鬼ものやドラキュラものの映画や各種作品を続けて読みたい、と思われた方は、その前に原点を本書で確認することをお奨めします。

吸血鬼ドラキュラ＝太陽に弱い、というのが世間の常識ですが、原点となる本書では、ドラキュラは真昼間から歩いています。それだけでも個人的には衝撃でした（ちなみに、90年代に作られたドラキュラの映画は、これを正しく反映してました）。

訳が古いので、ちょっと読みにくいかもしれませんが。
