　2000年に原書房から出た単行本の文庫化。続編に『明智小五郎対金田一耕助』がある。
　名探偵たちのパスティーシュ集。８編が収められている。
　対象となっているのは、ルパン、ホームズ、チャーリー・チャン、ネロ・ウルフ、金田一耕助、鬼貫警部、星影龍三、三番館のバーテン、エラリー・クイーン、ファイロ・ヴァンス、サム・スペードなどなど。黒岩涙香の翻訳小説を模したものまである。
　どれもパスティーシュとしては上々の出来。巧みに文体を真似、あちこちに名探偵の「癖」を挿入、くすぐりどころもきちんと仕込まれている。「名探偵」に馴染んできた読者には、たまらない一冊だろう。
　もちろん、ミステリとしての出来とか、問題点も少なくない。しかし、本書の目的はあくまで、上手に真似てみせることにあり、そこを鑑賞すべき。
　一般の読者には、あまり向かない一冊かも知れない。

タイトルにもなっている「真説ルパン対ホームズ」。期待して臨んだだけに失望の度合いも高い。日本人作家が書くとどうして日本絡みのストーリーになるのだろう。なぜ漱石が出てくるのだろう。高橋克彦然り、島田荘司然り。すべて安っぽい作品に仕上がっています。解説でこの作品を持ち上げている日暮雅通氏のセンスも疑われるというものである。

（一時的にせよ）両者を共闘させるまねはしてもらいたくなかったです。
第３の悪役（？）を出してもらいたくなかった。なれ合ってもらいたくなかった。
純粋に、名探偵と大怪盗の代表たるただお二人に、もう、知力の限りをつくしての直接対決を望んでいました。その点、作者から肩透かしを食らってしまった思いがします。
ただ、その時代の雰囲気はよく描けていたのではないかと思います。物語の前半部分を読んでいるときは、コーヒー片手に、じっくりと読みたい、と思ったほどです。

あと蛇足ですが、この文庫本には他にも収録作品（他の探偵物）がありますが（本の半分以上）、僕は「ホームズ対ルパン」だけを読みたかったので、他作品は読む気がせず、実際読んでいません。（パラパラとページをめくりましたが、読むのしんどそうで魅力が感じられなかった。）
できたら「ホームズ」と「ルパン」のものだけに統一してもらいたかったです。
