ミステリの持つ、謎解き、真相探しの楽しみをたっぷりと味わえます。「この人が犯人かな？」と思えばその根拠はすぐに崩され、次々と疑惑は膨らんでいきます。そして、一人の人間である被害者、山浦美津子の持つ多面性。これが一番の読みどころかもしれません。生徒にとっての「ミツコ先生」、同僚にとっての「山浦先生」、以前や現在の交際相手にとっての「美津子」。同一人物である被害者も、対する人が変われば全く異なった部分を見せます。「被害者は生前どんな人だったのか？」、これを探るのも本書の楽しみだと思います。

読んだことがある人ならすぐわかるが、本作品はバークレーの「チョコレート殺人事件」を骨子とし描かれた作品である。
但し、古典的名作の手法を十分消化しある意味新鮮さを感じさせてくれる所は並々ならぬ力量と思う。精緻な文章力がよりリアルさを増してくれる。貫井氏の本格推理物の代表作となろう。

このような結末は賛否両論・毀誉褒貶だろう。
しかしながら「貫井ワールド」を楽しめるという点では一級品であること、また「真実というものが如何に遠いか」「物事というものは、こんなに多面的なのか」ということを再認識できるという意味では、まさに「プリズム」のタイトルに恥じない作品だろう。
