どこかの団体からクレームが付けられて、いつ絶版になってしまうか、ハラハラドキドキものの作品です。
なにせ内容が内容ですので・・・・・

けれども作品自体は素晴らしい！
乱歩の個性が一番上手く出た変格物の推理小説というより怪奇小説です。
かなりおどろおどろしい描写が出て来ますが、グロテスクこそ最高の美であることを納得させてしまうような迫力を持っています。
当時の雰囲気そのままの挿絵も素晴らしいです。

そしてラストの一文に涙してしまいます。
至高の恋愛小説になっています。

乱歩の推理長編にはあまり魅力を感じてはいなかったが、この作品は別格です。

この作品の良さ・凄さは、推理小説然とした前半と中盤以降の怪奇・サスペンス小説とが融合してる所だと思います。全編を覆う謎・恐怖感は乱歩作品中　白眉。
密室、衆人観視の中での殺人は、本当に奇抜なアイディアだと思います。しかも、このアイディアを最後まで引張なかった所が本作のクオリティーを高めた点ではないでしょうか。

ラスト１ページには泣かされてしまった。

「盲獣」「蜘蛛男」「虫」などの作品で乱歩嫌いになられた方々がいるかもしれないがそのような方々におすすめなのがこの作品だと思う。乱歩の作品の後期のほとんどは本格推理よりも変格推理、俗にいうグロテスクなものが多いがこの作品は後期には珍しい本格物の傑作である。断筆の後に書かれただけあって新しい試みが感じられる。それにグロテスクさはあまりこの作品には描かれておらず人間の異常思考を強く出した作品だと思う。したがって推理小説好きの方にはおすすめの作品だ。
