「半身」で驚いた我々に更なる驚きを与える傑作。二人の女性の運命の変転そして過去までもが何回も変わってしまう衝撃に８００ページを超える厚さが決して長すぎるとは思えない。何よりも描写が細密、しつこいくらいに女性たちの生活や出来事が語られていきますが、注意深く読んでいくと終盤になってからの謎の提示に納得がいきます。Ｍ．ウォルターズを上回る新ミステリ女王の誕生かもしれない。

　上下2巻本を一気に読んでしまいました。ディッケンズの時代の英国を、その郊外の城の生活を、ロンドンの街を、精神病院をこれでもかというぐらい緻密に書き込んでいます。その雰囲気、不潔さ、猥雑さが匂うように感じられます。加えて、個性の強いキャラクター達と二転三転するストーリー、そして急展開の終盤、息もつかせません。

　ネタバレになるので、筋のことは伏せておきます。ただ、ここで描かれる恋愛について。「半身」もそうですが、この作者の書く恋愛は普通とはちょっと異なります。でも、この舞台設定と筋の中で、惹かれ合う二人の心理、その愛憎がとても細やかに描いてあって、もうラストが実に良くて、うーん、非凡な作者だなあ、と感じました。

長い小説なので、ゆっくりじっくり読もうと思っていましたが、どんどん吸い込まれてしまい、特に下巻は他のことは何もせずに一気に読んでしまいました。
運命に翻弄される主人公の女性二人。彼女達に自分がなってしまったように「え~っ！？聞いてないよ！」って言う感じでホントに面白かったです。
ロンドンの街、田舎の城、精神病院の様子がとても細かく描かれていて、薄暗い雰囲気で、あまり幸せを感じることができないのですが、結末はホントにスッキリしました。
文学作品としてお勧めです。
映画化・ドラマ化してほしいなぁ。
