ディクスン・カーの最高傑作といえば、本書か「火刑法廷」かを選ぶ人が多いと思うが、本書は紛れもなくカーの最高傑作と言えよう。
カーにしてはシンプルで読みやすく、ページ数も読み通すのに丁度いいぐらいで、それでいて驚愕度はＮｏ．１ときている。

私はクリスティーの「アクロイド殺し」のレビューで、「アクロイド」とクイーンの「Ｙの悲劇」、「レーン最後の事件」、それとルブランの「８１３」を、驚愕のラストを迎える作品として挙げたが、本書はこれら驚愕のラストを迎える作品群に匹敵する大傑作だ。

惜しむらくは密室殺人でもオカルティズムに満ちた作品でもなく、カーの味わいがまったく感じられないことだが、だからこそ誰にでも受入れられる作品とも言える。
絶対に読んで損のない一冊。

とにかく面白い！プロット、謎解きも絶妙だし、主人公の女性的な心理描写も実に巧み。

他の作品で、カーの禍々しく複雑な文章を読んだ方は、カーを悪文家と思っているかもしれないが、とんでもない。スマートな文章を書こうと思えば、サラリとこれくらいの作品が描けてしまうことをこの作品はあらわしていると思う。第一級のエンターテイメント。

作者がわからないまま本書を読んだら間違いなく「ああ、これはクリスティの作品だな。さすがだな〜」と思ったことでしょう（笑）

カーの作品は一部の傑作を除いて、トリックもストーリーも大味なものが多いんです（良くも悪くも）その点、本作は心理描写の細やかさといい、微妙な盲点をついた心理トリックといい、とても「カーらしくない」作品だと思います。ミステリ的な部分から離れても、不遇な女性主人公と取り巻きの男たち、そして物語の幕の引き方もカーらしくなく、クリスティの初期作に類似している感があります。「クリスティが絶賛した」というのも頷けますね。

メイントリックはとても素晴らしい。ミステリやTVドラマ等で類似のトリックが幾度も使われているのがその証明と言えるでしょう。プロットはそれほど複雑では無いので気軽に読めますし、ミステリファンなら必読の一冊です。
