バラエティーに富んだ内容で、長編よりも謎やプロットがすっきりしているため、カーの魅力がよりわかる好短編集です。ただし表題作の『妖魔の森の家』は要注意！これは長編に匹敵する内容のトリックとプロットが、これ以上ないほどに洗練され、凝縮されたカーの最高短編。現在活躍中の若手本格ミステリー作家に多大な影響を与えた名作です。二度三度読み返してそのすごさ、怖さを味わえます。

　読者の興味を惹く事件導入、悪ふざけとしか思えないファース、そして人間消失、読者の一枚二枚上を行く解決、読者を徹底的に叩きのめす伏線。
　まさに脱帽するしかない。巧みなミスディレクションにより、読者を真相から遠ざけてしまう手腕たるや見事。
　しかし何より、この小説の神髄は初読より再読の方が驚いてしまう点にある。
　再読すると、これでもかという証拠の提示に、自分のボンクラさを味わうこと必至。
　４〜５００頁もの中に、僅かワンセンテンス程度の証拠をひっそりと提出して、フェアプレイなどとぬかすエセ本格作家に見習ってもらいたい大傑作。
　これ以上の推理小説短編があるならぜひ教えて欲しい。

ある日突然の少女の失踪。神隠しのような　不可解な事件。
だが　なんと　少女は・・・・。
結末はどうなるんだろうと　ドキドキしながら読んでました
最後は大マジックの種明かしをみせられたような気分でした。
でも　その種明かしとは　想像もつかぬものでした。
カー　作品は驚かされることが多いですが、これは逸品だ
と思います。
