　X,Y,Zと続いてきて、そして、最後の最後に大どんでん返し。他の文庫では、「最後の悲劇」とも呼ばれているドルリー・レーンもの悲劇４部作の最終章。「Yの悲劇」が、エラリー・クイーンの最高傑作とも言われているが、私は、X、Y、Zすべてこの最終章を導くための伏線であったと考える。最後の１〜２ページにドルリー・レーンの思いがすべてこもっている、ペイシェンス・サムの思いがすべてこもっている、そして読者を引きつけてやまないミステリー作家エラリー・クイーンに対する絶賛の拍手を送るのだ。

前作『Zの悲劇』で登場したサム警部の娘ペーシェンス。その明晰な頭脳は最後に犯人へと到達するのだが、なぜエラリー・クイーンが彼女にペーシェンスという名を与えたのかがそこで読者には理解できるだろう。誰のためのペーシェンス(忍耐)か?
全編にシェイクスピアに対する深い造詣と愛情が充ち満ちている。そのプロットの壮大さは全作品一と言えるだろう。

間違いなくドルリー・レーン・シリーズの白眉だ。
しかしながら他のレビューアーの方々がご忠告されている通り（●＾o＾●）、X・Y・Z・最後の事件の順に読み、エラリー・クイーンの壮大な複線に触れるべきなのだろう。大傑作。

　レビューですが、内容云々は語るべきではないでしょう。
面白い作品であることは間違いありません。伝えたいことは一つ、
本作の前にXの悲劇、Yの悲劇、Zの悲劇を必ず読みましょう。
　私にとっては面白いというより、絶対に忘れることの出来ない
最高の作品です。部屋で一人きりの夜中、暗めの照明でじっくり
読むことをお薦めします。
