僕のホームズデビュー作です。おもしろいです。読みやすいです。
この後のホームズ作品にも言えますが、歴史背景やストーリーの進み方がホームズよりも犯人側（犯人が主人公と言っていいです）に向いてます。
ホームズが推理に至る課程はやはり外国の事なので理解しにくい点もありますが、全く違和感なく読み進められます。
また犯人の立場を考える優しさもホームズの美点です。
深く考えないでホームズの本格推理に浸る時間はとても楽しいと思いますよ。

有名なコナン・ドイルの、有名なシャーロック・ホームズ。
初めて読んだ。面白かった。

子どもの頃に、子ども向けのシリーズは読んだと思う。
しかし、実際にドイルの小説を読んだのは今回が初めて。
そして非常に面白くて驚いた。
これ以降のホームズ作品とは、若干毛色が違うらしいので、この作品だけが特別なのかもしれないが。

全体の構成、ホームズの性格づけ、アメリカ開拓時代の描写、某宗教の絡め方、etc..
現在の我々が読んでも目新しさはないが、これを19世紀末に書いていたことを想像するだけで、コナン・ドイルのすごさにゾクゾクしてしまう。
今度、他のホームズ作品も読んでみよっと。

当初この本を初めて読んだのは高校生のときで、その時はRACHEが示す「復讐」の意味と犯人の関連性がよくわからなかったが、現在（大学生）になってよく読んでみると、土地開発者ジェファソン・ホープが恩人ジョン・ファリアとルーシー・ファリアが死んでしまったことに対する恨みによる復讐の意味でRACHEという文字が血で書かれてあったことがわかった。血文字の意味からここまで推理するホームズには関心したが、こういう事は物語を深く読んでみないと本当にわからないので意外と複雑だったと思う。意外と難しい内容だったけどわかれば簡単だった。
