1956年、イギリス、ヨークシャー地方ハリファックス生まれ。1981年アイルランドに移り住み、現在ゴールウェイ近郊のキンバラに在住。1994年にアイルランドで処女作Switchersを刊行。以降、年一冊のペースで刊行を続ける。The Beguiler’s(2001)、The Alchemist’s Apprentice(2002)、Annan Water(2004)、『時間のない国で』(2005)で、ビスト最優秀児童図書賞を受賞。また『時間のない国で』はイギリスのビッグタイトル、ガーディアン賞、ウィットブレッド賞も受賞した
