たった二百数十ページを読み進めるうちに、何度言葉を失っただろう。
何度、こみ上げる涙を押さえられなかっただろう。
もちろんこの作者の邦訳済みの二冊を既に読んでいる方なら、にやりとする箇所も多い。

ハリケーン〈カトリーナ〉の被害の記憶もまだ新しい、ニューオーリンズの町が登場する。
彼の地では、「自由民」と呼ばれる黒人がいた。
南北戦争、人種差別、貧富格差・・・。
この時代を、打ちのめされながらも逞しく生き抜いたひとたちと、
残念ながらそうは出来なかったひとたち。
南北戦争の頃と現在のアメリカの状況がだぶってしまう。
何も進歩していないように思えてしまう。

最後の最後に用意されたどんでん返しによって、
わたしは胸を鷲掴みにされたような心持ちになり、
自分の身体の中を流れる「血」について考えた。
多くの日本人が意識したことのない「自分のルーツ」を。

最初から最後まで一気に読みました。
一方では迫り来る戦争の恐怖におびえ、登場人物一人一人の様々な思いに胸を揺さぶられ、泣き、それでいて、他方では全く先の読めないストーリーと登場人物の謎めいた魅力にワクワクしている自分がいました。

物語は最後、一番最初の場面に戻ります。状況は最初と全く同じなのに、自分自身の見方が最初とは違っていることに気づきます。何もわかっていなかった自分になんだか腹が立ちました。トムソーヤやハックルベリーフィンの冒険でおなじみのミシシッピ川、風と共に去りぬで有名な南北戦争。少しはアメリカについて知っているつもりだったのに、実は何にも分かっちゃいなかったんだ、と。

決して難しくない、すらすら一気に読める短い物語に、様々な人の思いや誇りとアメリカの歴史がずっしり詰まっています。読後、アメリカについて、もっともっと知りたくなりました。
