WHo's the SHADOW ? −−シャドウは、誰か？
そんな副題の作品、
第７回本格ミステリ大賞受賞作です。

小学５年生の凰介は母親を癌で亡くします。
ほどなく、幼なじみの亜紀の母親が自殺、
亜紀自身も事故に遭ってしまいます。
さらに、二人の父親の言動に不可解な点が生じて・・・。

とにかく、読みやすい。
ストーリー展開も小気味よく、
ページを繰る手が止まらなくなります。
そして、この作者得意の後半の二転三転。
シャドウとは何か。シャドウとは誰なのか。
結末に向けて物語は一気に加速します。

どんでん返しの衝撃度は、
それほど強くないけれど、
ラストに至るまでの物語展開が、
凰介の精神的苦悩と成長を描いています。
単なるミステリでは終わることなく、
小説として清々しさを感じさせるところが、
注目の作家と言われる所以だと思いました。

その一言に尽きる。
すらすら読めてしまうので、最後まで釈然としない犯人についても、なんとなく読みきってしまいました。
読んでから少したってのレビューなのですが、今ここに書くのが困ってしまうような、そんな本でした。
でも最後まで飽きずに読ませる力はあります。

前作『向日葵の咲かない夏』よりホラー色が薄まっていてホッとしました。が、今回も悲惨さ
は続きます。

お父さん同士、お母さん同士が学生時代からの親友であり、勤務先も大学病院と大学医学部の
研究室という近さ、それぞれの子ども達もまた同じ年というふたつの家族を巡るミステリー。

静かな筆致なのに力強いリーダビリティで、物語世界を次々に繰り出します。すっかりある
人物に疑いをかけたままラストまで引っ張られました。「やられた！」とは思うのですが、
裏切られたというより物語を楽しませてもらったという満足感です。
