この作品「アルファベット・パズラーズ」は東京、井の頭公園の近くにある＜ＡＨＭ＞というマンションのオーナー峰原卓とその住人である奈良井明世（犯罪やミステリ関係の翻訳家）、後藤慎司（警視庁捜査一課の刑事）、竹野理絵（精神科医）の４人がオーナーの居間で紅茶とクッキーを楽しみながら、難事件を解決していきます。もちろん現地調査にも出かけます。マナーとして展開は言えませんが、本格推理の作家である大山氏は意外な結末を用意していて読者を楽しませてくれます。氏は２００２年にe-novelsの犯人当て短編小説で「彼女がペイシェンスを殺すはずがない」を発表しで話題になり、光文社文庫の新人の登竜門である短編公募「鮎川哲也監修　二階堂黎人編　新・本格推理０３」には「聖ディオニシウスのパズル」が収録されている。

マイナス
英国ゆずりのマナーをわきまえた深窓の老嬢が「こんなドジはされたくない」というかな。
「印象派の小品だけで一財産だ」とか、著者は描写力も品（ひん）も無い。
謎の提起と解決を「小説」の形式で表現する能力はこの人には無い。
「我慢」と「寛容」のあるかたは評価されるのでは。

ミステリーでも本格物として期待するとそこまでではない
気軽に読むミステリーとして楽しむなら可能
翻訳をされてた癖が文体にあるため、日本文学と海外文学（ハヤカワミステリーなど）がごっちゃになった感じではあります。その根本が鼻に付くと読みずらいかもしれません。
ラストの幕引きが、宣伝ほど驚くに到りませんでした。
二転三転してるのがむしろ失敗の感が否めません。
