　前作の『驚異の発明家の形見函』とリンクはしているが、続編ではありません。ぺダンチックで博物館学的な雰囲気は前作同様ですが、舞台が現代なこともあって、歴史ミステリーというより、ある物を探すため主人公が奮闘する知的冒険物といった感じがしました。作者の実体験に基づいているせいか、主人公の職業を、図書館の職員にしたのは成功していると思います。おかげで、本の分類規則に関するうんちくやら、本の持ち出し防止に苦労したり、図書館利用者との滑稽な応対風景と、図書館の知られざる内部を描写しているのが、特に面白く読めました。日本のイレズミが意外なところで登場するのも良かったと思います。
