　アル・カポネなどのギャングがはびこる大都会シカゴで育った少年ジョーイと妹のメアリ・アリスは、1929年から1935年まで、夏がくるとイリノイ州中部の田舎で暮らす祖母を訪れた。

　最初、都会っ子の二人からすれば、祖母の住む田舎町は退屈なところに見えた。だが、大柄でショットガンを振り回す豪快な祖母が、次々と巻き起こす騒動に、二人はすっかり圧倒される。とんでもない嘘はつく、法は無視する、といささか乱暴なやりくちで、町の秩序を守っていく祖母の姿に、引き寄せられて毎年足を運ぶのだ。

　本書は、７つの夏のエピソードと1942年に軍隊輸送列車に乗って出征するジョーイを見送る祖母の姿を描いた８つの章からなり、今や当時の祖母の年齢を超えてしまったジョーイ老人がその思い出を回想する形になっている。

　祖母なりのやり方で豪快に正義を貫く様子は読んでいて、とても小気味がよく、同時にどこかノスタルジーを感じさせる魅力的な作品に仕上がっている。

　また、訳文がとてもすばらしく、機会があったら、ぜひ原書と合わせて読むべきだと思う。

　ごくごくたまにないですか?読み始めた瞬間に｢絶対この本好きになる｣って､確信を持てる本｡ピンとくる､ってやつです｡私にとって､この本はそんな一冊でした｡
　禁酒法の時代のシカゴ､ｱﾙ･ｶﾎﾟﾈが勢力を振るっており､マシンガンの別名は｢シカゴのタイプライター｣｡そんなシカゴより怖いのはこの町､祖母の住む片田舎｡

　この恐ろしさの所以は､祖母によるものです｡まず第一にでかい｡田舎町であるにも関わらず､近所づきあいを拒む｡愛想がない｡手段を選ばない｡嘘をつく､それも派手に､そして結果をほくそえむ｡所有地に入り込む｡ショット･ガンをぶちかます｡

　好きになりそうでしょ?でも本を読み終えた頃には､最初に想像してたよりも､もっとおばあちゃんを好きになってるはずです｡妹のアリスも､話が進むごとに将来の祖母を思わせる小粋なキャラとなっていきます｡
　あっという間に読んでしまい､最初の直感どおりこの本は私の｢心の友｣になったのでした｡

幼きころ毎年のように妹メアリ・アリスと夏を過ごした、おばあちゃんとの思い出をジョーイが回想する。
体が大きくて言動はもっと大きい、おばあちゃん。
他人のボートで・他人の土地で・違法なナマズ取り。
これだけなら駄作となるところを作者は上手に快いものに変える。

表紙を見ると飛行機が描かれ地上におばあちゃんと女の子が居るでしょ。
おばあちゃんが最初は飛行機に乗ったんですが重過ぎて飛べませんでした。
このお話では飛行機に乗りたいジョーイを見事飛行機に乗せちゃいました。

それは正義かどうか解らないけれど、正義の味方って感じの偉大なおばあちゃんのお話し。
こういうの好きです。
よろしければ読んでみて下さい。
