「週刊文春」20世紀傑作ミステリーベストテンで堂々の第２位。しかし本書を純粋なミステリーや推理小説だと期待して読むと、いい意味で裏切られます。

確かに筋立ては中世の僧院を舞台にした連続殺人事件を中心に展開しますが、本書の主題は謎解きの面白さというよりも（純粋に謎解きという面からみた場合、トリックの奇想天外さや手がかりの配置の巧みさ、という点ではむしろ不十分かも知れません。）、古典文学や神学の知識を縦横無尽、幾重にも織り込んだ舞台設定を堪能させながら、殺人事件の解明というストーリーを通じて、「真理（真相）を絶対視することの危険性」を読者に問いかける点にあります。

本書は一読しただけでは味わいきれない、いや、おそらくほとんどの読者にとって、本書を味わい尽くすことは不可能でしょう。しかし、中世北イタリアの僧院というエキゾチシズムあふれる舞台設定と、「真理とは」という壮大な主題にむけて収斂、昇華していくストーリーを追いかけるだけで、十分に「読書の醍醐味」を満喫することができます。「20世紀中第２位」というのは少し大げさかも知れませんが、世評に恥じない大著だと思います。

長編ですが、上巻から下巻に入って、エーコの尋常ならぬ博学のなせる技はますますさえわたり、もう読者は、中世の僧院から世界の謎をかいま見させてくれそうな不思議な高まりを感じます。

　いま　考えてみると　本書は　インターネットの現代にひきつけて読むと　違った味わいがある。

　本書の主人公は言うまでもなく「図書館」である。中世の「図書館」とは　「時代の知性」そのものであり　その「知性」をどのように管理すべきなのかが　本書のテーマだと読める。実際　本書で展開される殺人事件の動機は　「情報をどのように管理するか」という極めて現代的な問題と　同じレベルである。

　これを現代に置き換えると　「図書館」は「ネット空間」であり「ネット空間における情報」であると読める。ネット時代の情報管理は　巨大な課題であり　現代でも　十分　殺人事件の動機になりえる。僕らには見えないが　そんな事件も起こっているに違いない。

　殺人事件の犯人は　神の為、神に代わって　情報を管理することに命を賭けた。そんな犯人を　探偵は「おまえは悪魔だ」と喝破する。この場面が　本書の白眉だが　その「悪魔」は　いま　この瞬間　２１世紀の現代にも生きている。そう読むと　本書も　なかなか恐ろしい。
