海洋写真家として有名な中村氏が，日本の島々約500について，その名前の由来と現況を美しい写真と共に解説している．海中写真，航空写真，陸からの写真と，島の美しさを描くために，陸海空の写真をバランス良く使われている．
島の名前は，日本語由来のものだけでなく，アイヌ語からも多いが，種子島という名前もアイヌ語という説があるという．南方の島ではマオリ語が語源でないかという説があるところもある．現在の地勢とは関係なく，世界の海洋が繋がっていることを実感させられる．また，記録に残っている中では，欧米諸国の大航海時代に発見されたというのが一番古いという島もある．こんな小さな島まで，その時代に発見され，名前も付けられていたのか，という驚きもある．
