カトリック教会で、たまに白い陶磁製の聖母子像などをみることがあります。近所の教会ではクリスマスの季節には、教会前のケースにディスプレイするようです。白中心ですが、背景には青の釉薬も使ってあります。

この白い釉は、鉛釉で、白は錫、青はコバルトによる発色のようです。また、陶器であって、有田産の人形や、南中国で制作され輸出された白磁の観音像のような硬い磁器ではありません。

このような白い陶器の聖像の発展は、イタリアのルカ＝デッラ＝ロッビアと、その一族によるもののようです。アンドレアの作品が、先年の東京での［ルネサンス展］にもきていました。彼らの仕事が古典となり、後世、大小、無数の製品を生み出しています。陶製ということから、大量の生産にもむいているからでしょう。

彼らの作品は、フィレンチェのパイジェルロ美術館に多く所蔵されているようです。
ヲールター＝ペイターの古典的著作［ルネサンス］も一章をこの陶器像に捧げています。このように、影響のある仕事なのに、解説書は少なく日本語の本としては、この本が初めてではないかと思います。

ルカは大理石の彫像や浮き彫りも多数残しています。ルネサンス展でも２点きていました（No.15と他1点）。11頁の合唱隊席浮き彫りは、ＬＰ時代のハルモニアムンディ［ジョスカン作品集］のジャケットに使われていたので、私には親しみ深いものでした。
イタリアルネサンスの巨匠たち］シリーズで、この本は、もっとも特異な掘り出しものだと思います。
