この本は著者の奥様が３３歳の若さで子供を残し、他界する、というショッキングなエピソードではじまります。子供のひどいアトピー含めて、新築の家の化学物質が奥様の死に関係していたのではないか、と著者は考えます。神戸の震災も、家の倒壊、火事による被災は「家」が問題だったのではと問い、彼の「家」の追求が始まり、ついには北海道の「木の家たいせつ」にたどりつきます。

この「木の家たいせつ」はオーナーの信念に基づき、材木の加工から、家の建築、メンテナンスまでを一環しておこなっています。非常にユニークなとりくみは、海外からも評価されているそう。この家づくりがいいのか悪いのか、という評価は私にはできませんが、つくり手の顔が見えるモノ作り、というのは信頼できます。あまりにも機能分化が進んでしまった現代、モノ作りはつくり手と使い手がかけはなれてしまい、お互いの顔をみる術もなくなってしまいました。その結果、売れればよいという、無責任な商売が成り立ってしまったのだと思います。これは家づくりに限りません。作り手が、使い手の喜ぶ顔を見ることができれば、使い手が困るようなものを作るわけがないのです。とかく忙しい現代において、ちょっと立ち止まって考えることのできるヒトが増えれば、家づくりももっともっとよくなると思うし、快適な家が増えれば、人々の心にももっと余裕ができるのでは、と思いました。

家に関すること、家に係わることをすごいいろいろ広い知識と体験で書いてあります。これから建築を学ぶ人、これから家を購入しようとする人！は絶対に読んでほしいと思う本です。間違いだらけの今の家に驚愕し、正しい家がなんなのかがよく見えてきます。そして家も地域も文化も未来に進むべき方向がわかります。読んで得する本なので読んでみてください。

内容の６割は、北海道の某住宅メーカーの提供する家が、他の住宅メーカーのものに比べていかに優れているかを説明している。しかし、よくあるＰＲ本ではない。筆者は家というものを、機能からだけでなく、むしろ家族・環境・地域経済・地域社会・歴史などを担うものとして位置付けて論じている。広範な内容をカバーしながらも、うまくまとめられており、優れた文明論になっていると思う。
家を買う前に、読んでおきたい本。
