レスター・サロー。こんなに頭のいい人がいるのか、関心もし、数少ない信頼している経済学者である。96年出版の際読み、目からウロコの思いがした。社会主義の崩壊を始めとしたパラダイム変化の話しはその通りなのだが、96年の時点で、戦後アメリカ経済の分析、とりわけ我々の生活に直結する富の分配の不平等に関し、フィールドリサーチを十分した分析の鮮やかさに驚いたし、非常に説得力があり、それは日本の近未来の姿と直感した。所得金額ではなく、所得の購買価値でみるとアメリカの労働者、とくい中流階級の人たちの「黄金時代」は50年代後半から60年代にかけてで、その後は富の分配の不平等が進み、80年代からはとうとう中流が崩壊をはじめた。ホワイトカラーのブルーカラー化。いわゆる「勝ち組」「負け組」に別れる弱肉強食がすすみ、多くの中流階級が共稼ぎしなければ家計が成立しなくなっていった。ここ数年来、日本で起きている現象がまさにそうだ。一億総中流意識は崩れ、階層化が急速に進んでいる。資本主義の未来は96年の時点でおもに過去を分析したものだが、日本にとっては「予言の書」のようなものでその警告もなされている。そして、それは「構造改革」の掛け声をいくら叫んでも現実のこととして日本を蝕み、安心社会の崩壊、希望なき不安の時代が具現化している。10年後、20年後を考えると空恐ろしい。その意味でもこの本はいまでも価値を失っていない。

レスターサロー氏は私にとって信頼する数少ない経済学者の１人だ。世の中にはこんなに頭のいい人もいるのかと感心する。本書の論旨は富の分配の不平等性と資本主義の限界、課題にある。社会主義の崩壊とともに、世界経済の仕組みは市場経済が基本となりグローバル化かすすんだ。とくに「勝ち組」「負け組」という言葉に代表される富の分配の不平等はひどい。サローはその実態を戦後アメリカ経済における富の分配の歴史と不平等性を実証的に明らかにしている。具体的にいうならグローバルスタンダードという名のアメリカンスタンダードで「適者生存」の原則＝弱肉強食がすすみ、アメリカでは80年代には中流の崩壊が始まり、今日ではホワイトカラーのブルーカラー化が進んでいる。サローによると、米国の中流階級がもっとも豊かだったのは50年代後半から60年代にかけてだという。それは「一言で言うなら「階層化」の深刻化であり、富の分配の不公平だ。社会主義の崩壊は資本主義の勝利ではなく、グローバル時代への対応もできていない。日本にも触れ、処方せんも書いているが、一億総中流と言われた日本の社会も、失われた10年を経て、とうとう日本も階層化が始まった。若者が貧乏になり、失業率も高くなった。自営業はつぶれ、せいぜい２０％程度の人たちのみが豊かを享受するような社会に構造変化しつつある。マメリカのあとを追うかのごとく。悲しいかな予見はあたった。
