本書はわかりやすいグレン・グールド解説本ではありません。

『ゴルドベルク変奏曲』をまねた構成になっており、その意味で、
本書の全体を読了した後、なんとなくグレン･グールドについての
イメージが喚起される、あるいは、グレン･グールドが各章（本の中
の各変奏）ごとに宿っている、というような書き方といったらいい
でしょうか。つまり、グールドの「輪切り」といったら適切かもし
れません。

著者は、フランスのエリート官僚の経歴ももち、精神分析を駆使し
つつ執筆した本もあるようです。本書では精神分析の影は見受けら
れませんが、音楽に関する知識はさすがに豊富です。ただ、冒頭に
書いたように決してわかりやすい書き方をしているわけではありま
せん。

ルポタージュでもないし
伝記でもないし
評論でもないし
エッセイでもない。

しかし全編にわたって
グールドへの深い共感が溢れる。

グールドの残した数々の言葉やエピソードから
まるでパズルを解くように
グールドの内面をすくい取る名文。

みなさんも一度手に取ってください。

本書を読んでもグールドの孤独な魂の在処も演奏と人生の秘密も解き明かされない。ひたすら思わせぶりな文体と内容で、かっこよくグールドを神格化するだけのジャーナリズムにすぎない。グールドのようなすばらしく硬質な音楽家の評伝がなぜ、こんな格好だけスマートで無内容の文章に収まりうるのか、本書の著者は恥を知るべきである。評伝の難しさでもあるのだろうが、本書はグールドの評伝としては、残念ながら期待を裏切る浅薄さしか持ち合わせてない。
