1983年秋、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校での英語で行われた6回講演をタイプに起こしたもの。

　フーコーは死ぬ寸前の講義まで、真理を語る主体としてのギリシャ語の「パレーシア」について語っていた。

　とりあげている範囲は最後の2著作と同じギリシャ・ローマである。

　自己と真理、それと権力の関連性について説いているが、現在これを読むには、最後の二著作を個人の存在と社会性の関連で読み直す場合に、手掛かりになるかもしれない。
