　片岡義男は前作『日本語の外へ』で戦後の日本とアメリカとの関係を、英語と日本語という構図に置き換えて厳しく論評した。本書では日本語と英語の対比ぶりを分析して、戦後の日本社会の大きな欠落について論じている。

　ここで言われる「英語」とは、必ずしもアメリカ英語、すなわち多くの日本人が身につけたがっている英語を意味しない。それはすでにある種の「世界共通語」として多くの国で他国との交渉に用いられる言語、としてとらえられる。そしてこの言語は「ひとりの主体が可能な限り機能していくための言語」と位置付けられ、それは日本語とは全く異なるものであり、だから結局日本の教育における英語というものは「進学のための試験で取る点数という次元にまでおとしめられている」と見事に切り捨てられている。

　そして「日本語」については、いかなる意味でも「個人」としては存在せず、何らかの集団に帰属することによってしか己を自覚できない状態から生まれる言語とされ、戦後社会において、それらの「集団」や「枠」がいっそう強まってきたのではないかと重い疑問を投げかける。

　そういう日本人には「思想」など持ち得ないのだという。集団を離れると自分がどこにどうしているのか明確な定義づけがわからないのだから。これは真実だと思う。確かに、そうではない新しい「日本人」もいる。でも大多数はいまだに「自分」を確立するより「自分の所属」を確立することの方に重きをおいていないだろうか。「所属」を前面に出すということは、片岡氏も述べているが、「自分の責任回避」に他ならない。グローバリゼーションの中、日本人は各個人の集合体という「大人の社会／国家」をつくれるのだろうか。
　それが「日本語で生きる」人々のこれからの重要な課題なのだろう。

元首相の宮沢喜一は英語で夢を見るそうだ。
しかし、普通の日本人たるわれわれは日本語を使い、考え、
それにしたがって行動する。
言葉が思考様式とわかち難く密接なものであるのは、経験的に
理解できても、それほどまでに呪縛されているものとは思い至らない。
しかし、もとより言葉というものはそういうものかもしれない。

日本語と英語、この対照的なLanguage様式の狭間で著者が考え、思考した束がこの一冊に凝縮されている。
日本語を切っ掛けにして、日本、アメリカ、そして個人として生きることの意味を問い続ける。
