表題作を含め１２の短編から成っている“旅”を中心とした大人向けの物語集。
物語の主人公達は旅に出る、あるいは出ない。しかし、いつでも“旅”のもつ不安感を背負っている。
主人公たちは見知らぬ、あるいはよく知っている人達との疎外感に悩まされる。
（その心の動きの描き方が繊細で巧い）
でも同時に物語には美しく、厳しく、優しい自然があり、不安を受け入れてくれる。
だけど解決はしない。そこには、「違う人間なんだから、全てを理解しあえることはない」という本質的な問題が通奏低音のように流れている。
でも、それを受け入れる強さがこの物語たちにはあると思う。

ヤンソンが大人向けに書いた小説、ということで手にとってしまいました。
もう舞台はムーミン谷というユートピアではなく、「旅」がテーマのこの作品のそれぞれの登場人物はどこへ行こうとしているのか、彼らには何が起こっているのか…。

読み解く努力が少々必要です。でも、北欧の静謐な空気とヤンソンの美しいストイックな文体、そしてシリーズ全部を揃えたくなる美しい装丁がお気に入りです。
