1907‐1981。山口県大島生まれ。働きながら師範学校を卒業、小学校の教師になる。上京して渋沢敬三の主宰するアチック・ミューゼアム(日本常民文化研究所の前身)に入る。以後、農山漁村、僻地、離島をくまなく歩き、庶民の生活誌に重点をおいた、独自の方法による宮本民俗学を生みだした(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

民俗学者宮本常一氏（1907-1981）の代表作の中から選び出された作品
「忘れられた日本人」
「いそしむ人々」
「愛情は子供と共に」
忘れられた日本人は読んでいましたが、他の２作品の中の文章は初めて読んだ。
宮本常一を読まれた事の無い方は是非とも手にとってもらいたい一冊です。
「忘れられた日本人」の中からは、当然ですが、対馬にて、土佐源氏、女の世間、梶田富五郎翁が入っています。国家という枠組みでは語れない日本人の貧しくも生き生きとした生活を宮本さんが書き残しています。
「いそしむ人々」では日本の食文化を庶民の食事を詳細に記載することで僕らに遺してくれています。
「愛情は子供と共に」では、子供の世界がある種の神性さを持ちながら、社会の中で折り合いをとりながら存在する様を子供組や若者組という共同体の中の役割として教えてくれます。そして、宮本さんご自身の子供時代の想い出や経験、二男を亡くした辛い経験を書き綴っています。

貨幣というモノがまだ日本人を拝金主義に染めていない、そう古くない時代を僕は宮本さんや網野善彦さんの本で知ったのです。
そして宮本さんも危惧した、「進歩とは何なんだろうか、これまで自分は発展と言ってきたけれども、発展とは何なのだろうか、進歩という名のもとにわれわれはじつにたくさんのものを切り捨ててきたのではないか」「切り落とされてきたものの中に非常に大事なものがある」 という言葉を心に常駐させていなければと思うのです。
