単行本を買いそびれていたのだが文庫化を機会に購入した。文芸評論家界随一の芸人、斎藤美奈子らしい一冊だった。

文章読本の謎？を解明するのに、日本の学校における作文教育、綴り方教育の歴史にまで手を広げるという、手間も時間もかけた一冊。それはチョット強引でないかい？こじつけでないかい？と突っ込みたくなる時もあるが、そもそも、何かを評論するという行為は最終的には筆者の主観に基づくのだから、読み手はそれを気にすることなく彼女の「芸」を楽しめばいいと思う。

彼女の評論は、けなされた作品ほど読んでみたいと思わせるものだが、今回に限っていえばそういう気分にならなかった。引用されている文章を読まされるだけでお腹一杯、ごちそうさま、という感じだった。きっと、引用された文章だけではなく、その執筆姿勢まで彼女に突っ込まれ、メッタ斬りされているからなのだろう。

第一回小林秀雄賞の受賞作とのことだが、小林秀雄も草葉の陰で笑っているに違いない。

斎藤美奈子は、日本で数少ない、読者を笑わせることができる文芸評論家だ。是非読んでみたいと思うのだが、彼女自ら「文章読本」を書いてみる気はないのだろうか。きっと自分でボケて自分で突っ込みを入れるというおもしろい作品になると思うのだが。

文章読本、文章の書き方、文章術といった類の本にメスを入れる。目の付け所がいいと思う。
ダメとされる言い回しや、逆に良いとされる論調をパクりつつ茶化すのがツボにはまって笑える。
ただ、現代の視点で、亡き巨匠を斬ることが時々虚しく響くこともあった。

序盤は痛快で、筆者の性格が良く現れているが、中盤以降は論文のようにまじめな印象。
自ら物書きとしてのプライドが出ていて、毒舌評論家らしからぬ一面が見られる力作だと思う。

まず、世の中にこんなにたくさん文章読本なるものが存在していたのか･･･と驚かされました。
私自身は「文章読本」というあからさまなタイトルのモノは買ったことがないけれど、それでも「日本語練習帳」とかは買った記憶があります。
そういうモノを読んだからといって、とくに文章が上達したわけではないのですが、これだけ出版されているということは、それなりに需要のある分野ではあるのでしょうね。
今作品でも、斎藤さんの批評を楽しく読ませていただきました。
また、明治以降の国語教育の歴史も垣間見られて、参考になりました。
