１９９９年１０月刊行の『倚りかからず』に三篇の詩を加えたもの。単行本は話題になり、現代詩集としては異例の１５万部を売上げた。
茨木さんの詩は、強い意志を感じさせ、自分に、人々に喝を入れるようなものが印象深いが、本書にはとりわけそんな詩が多く含まれていると感じる。「もはや／いかなる権威にも倚りかかりたくはない」と綴り、「倚りかかるとすれば／それは／椅子の背もたれだけ」で結ばれる表題作は、弛緩し、流されやすく、自分の主張をもたない人で溢れる世の中に、烈しいパンチのごとく繰り出された。なんと４０年余りかかってできあがった詩だという。時代が呼んだのかもしれない。

時代といえば、「時代おくれ」という詩も印象深い。情報を集めて、急いでどうするの、頭はからっぽのまま・・・と問いかけ、自分は進んで時代おくれを選びとっているのだと綴る。それでも、旧式の黒電話で呼び出し音を聞きながら、行ったこともないシッキムやブータンの子らに思いを馳せ、こう結ぶ。
　　　何が起ろうと生き残れるのはあなたたち
　　　まっとうとも思わずに
　　　まっとうに生きているひとびとよ
「時代おくれ」の象徴みたいな黒電話も、それを使っている自分もまだまだ新しいのだ。
こんな詩に茨木さんの謙虚さのようなものを感じて、ますます好きになってしまう。

山根基世さんの解説では、茨木さんの詩作に対する姿勢を知ることができる。

暖衣飽食の時代をただよう今日の日本人に宛てた茨木さんの「白鳥の歌」。読む度に襟を正されるものを感ずる。中田英寿を詠んだ「球を蹴る人」と山根基世さんの解説文も佳品。座右に置いて何度も読み返したい一書です。

この詩集の中で一番好きな詩は『ピカソのぎょろ目』です。
茨木さんが生前、バセドウ氏病だったことが書いてあり、
バセドウ氏病の私にとって親近感がわく詩でした。妙に納得してしまう仮説の詩。

美術史の専門家にピカソはバセドウ氏病だったんじゃないかと聞く
熱の入れっぷりにユーモアを感じて
同じ病気の私まで一緒に謎を解いて戦っているような気がして好きでした。

『倚りかからず 』に関しては是非、読んでみてください。
その力強い言葉と、その後の力の抜けようの落差が面白い詩だと思います。
そして、その言葉に感動します。

全体を通して思ったことは、チャーミングで素敵な方だと言うことです。
装丁も蝶が美しくてプレゼントにも喜ばれる一冊だと思います！おすすめです。
