野家 啓一
1949年、仙台市に生まれる。1971年、東北大学理学部物理学科卒業。1976年、東京大学大学院科学史・科学基礎論専攻博士課程中退。1979‐80年、プリンストン大学客員研究員。現在、東北大学副学長。専門は科学哲学。1994年に第20回山崎賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

クーンのパラダイム論に代表される「新科学哲学」が提起した一連の哲学的テーゼ――「観察の理論負荷性」「通約不可能性」など――に対するさまざまな誤解を解き、ときに提唱者自身の勇み足をも指摘する。とことんあらゆる角度から新科学哲学を検討しなおした労作。

パラダイム論の哲学的意義をこれほどまでに徹底的に掘り下げて論じた著作は他に見たことがありません。新科学哲学といえば村上陽一郎氏の著作ですが、哲学的深度という点では野家啓一氏のほうが数段上かと。村上氏より数段むずかしく感じられますが。

本書を読んで、それまでパラダイム概念のことをぼんやりと認識枠組みのようなもので、あるいは研究の見本例のようなもので…と実にあいまいに理解して済ませていた自分を反省しました。徹底的に考察すればそんなあいまいな理解でいいはずがなかったんですね。ごめんなさい。救いはクーン自身だって超あいまいに考えていたってことでしょうか。

新科学哲学に対するクワインの、ひいてはプラグマティズムの、侮りがたい重要性の指摘も蒙を啓かれました。ウィトゲンシュタインのアスペクト知覚の問題からまさか構造主義言語学のヤーコブソンにまで話がつながってしまうとは全く恐れ入りました。「風景が一変する」に近いくらいの読書体験であったかと思います。

科学を数ある物語のうちのひとつの形式として相対化するという現在着々と進行中の（はずの）野家氏のプログラムの一端が本書で伺えますが、まだ本書ではその「物語」の性格の分析は具体化されていないなあという印象でした。

９３年出版されたものに「現代科学論とサイエンス・ウォーズ」「プラグマティズムの帰結」
「ウィトゲンシュタインの衝撃」の三論文を増補したもの。
感覚与件に基礎付けを求める「自然主義」、一方それを歴史的物語として相対的に見る双方の
流れについて、論理実証主義、批判的合理主義或いはハンソン、クーン、ハーバーマスらにふ
れながら見通しよく整理している。
増補の論文でクリプキの本質主義（著者はこれを結局は「科学的実在論」と批判するが）クワ
インの全体論、パトナムやローティら、「知の欺瞞」をきっかけとするサイエンス・ウォー
ズ、ウィトゲンシュタインのアスペクト論なども検討している。
著者の立場は（タイトルからもほぼ推察がつくように）素朴な科学的実在論では勿論なく、自
然をテキストとした「解釈学」や「生成の無根拠性」を主張している。
ひととおりの議論をへたうえで、なお形而上学をどうとらえるかなど興味はつきない。
科学について漠然と「事実の観察に基づいて一歩一歩進歩している」と信じている人は、本書
を是非よまれたい。
