アレント,ハンナ
現代の最もすぐれた女性政治思想家。1906年、ドイツのユダヤ人家庭に生まれる。マールブルク大学でハイデッガーに、ハイデルベルク大学でヤスパースに師事、哲学を学ぶ。1933年、ナチスの迫害を逃れてフランスへ、41年にはアメリカへ亡命。20世紀の全体主義を生み出した現代大衆社会の病理と対決することを生涯の課題とした。1975年没

阿部 齊
1933‐2004年。筑波大学教授、放送大学教授を歴任。専攻は政治哲学、現代アメリカ政治学(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　「暗い時代」とは文字通りユダヤ人虐殺をはじめとして、人間の基本的人権が守られなかった暗黒の時代でもあったが、逆説的にそれは真に才能ある人々の真価を浮き彫りにした時代でもあった。アレントがここで取り上げた人々はまさに「才能ある」という形容詞が冠される一流の人々である。
　ちょうど中心に収められているブロッホ論が最も難解で、力を入れて書かれているように思われる。しかし、解説によると、ブロッホの思想にアレントは共感を覚えているわけでもなかったようだ。彼女の哲学者としての、他人の思想を理解する力量をここに見る思いである。
　ベンヤミンについては彼の批評家としての特質を見事に分析している。最近、ベンヤミンの「暴力批判論」がローザ・ルクセンブルグについて書かれたものではないか、という新説が出されているので（「変成する思考」）両者について論じられているのは興味深い。
　あきらかに異質なのは師ヤスパースを論じた二編である。ここにはヤスパースの業績を一歩退いて明らかにし讚えようとする意図は勿論感じられるが、ヤスパースへの敬意が透けて見えるのである。これは他の九人を論じるときの、むしろ冷ややかとも言える語り口とは一線を画しているようにわたくしには感じられた。
　なお、初版から翻訳には定評があったようだが、確かに阿部氏の訳は大変素晴らしい。アレントは日本語訳には恵まれているようである。
