ポランニー,マイケル
1891年、ブダペスト生まれ。ブダペスト大学で医学博士号・化学博士号取得。1933年、ナチスの人種迫害を避けて英国に亡命。マンチェスター大学物理化学教授(のち社会科学に転ずる)、オックスフォード大学主任研究員等を歴任。76年、死去

高橋 勇夫
1953年岩手県生まれ。東京大学英文科卒。専修大学助教授(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ポラニーの傑作「個人的知識」は確かに傑作である。しかし、あまりにも話が広範囲に及ぶゆえ、かなりの助走が必要になってくる。「暗黙知」について知りたいと思うのであれば、この本を読んで勇気をもらってから「傑作」に入っていくのはいい手段だと私は思う。そして、しかも訳書としても、要約書としてもなかなかいい本だとも思うのである。

「暗黙知」を静態的かつ明言できない知識の集合体のように受け取っているレビュアーが居られるが、それは本質的ではない。Tacit Knowingは「知ること」のシステマティックな動的プロセス全体である。そして。そのプロセスを行っている自分自身から切り離された対象物としては何ものも「ない」ことを、Personal Knowledgeと表現しているのである。

加えて、ポランニーは生命論の文脈において機械を否定していない。それどころか『機械の中の幽霊』（By アーサー＝ケストラー）よろしく、機械に生命と同様のダイナミックな構図を見て取っているのである。非生命とは明らかに異なる原理が、機械と生命には同様に立ち現れている、と。

さらに、本書で注目されている胚の等能性については、最新の進化発生生物学（EVO-DEVO）がもたらしたすばらしい知見と併読することで、進化と創発について非常にスリリングな読書体験と思索を堪能することが出来る。

暗黙知の概念は、ポスト・モダンのブームが行ってしまったから消えても良いというようなものではないと思う。暗黙知とは、職人が弟子に、己を見て技を盗めというように、言葉では伝えられない知識をいうのだが、本書は、それがどのように存在しどのように機能するかなどをひとつの理論として作り上げた論考である。情報社会の科学技術の普及伝搬が論文など言葉によることが圧倒的に多く、それらが極度に高く評価され、暗黙知などは評価されない傾向がある。そのような時に、次世代を切り開く科学技術を暗黙知の中に求めるのは賢い選択かもしれない、と思いませんか？そう思わない方にも、そう思う方にも、是非、この本を読んで見ていただきたい。
