1986年、M・エリアーデの死によって、大著『世界宗教史』は未完の書として残された。その愛弟子であり学問的後継者であったヨアン・P・クリアーヌは、エリアーデから最終巻の編集を依頼され、師の精神と構想に基づいてまとめる作業を行ったが、中途、彼もまた不慮の死を遂げてしまう。最終刊のドイツ語原本の版元ヘルダー社は、エリアーデ、クリアーヌの意を受け、著名な宗教学者や民族学者の協力を得てそれを完成させた。これにより、既刊分では論じられなかった諸地域がカバーされることとなった。文庫版第8巻は、西・中央アフリカ、南米インディオ、北米オグララ・スー族、日本の神道、啓蒙主義以降のヨーロッパなど各地の宗教。全8巻完結。
