ただ単に外国語に興味のあるだけの人でも、今学習しているという人どちらにも
おすすめの本です。本書は、安っぽいハウツー本とは違い、
外国語学習において重要なポイントを論理的に、かつわかりやすく説明していて、
ところどころにユーモアも混じっています。堅苦しい本ではないし、
他の言語の比較などもあり、読んでいて楽しいです。
ただ「〜するべし」と勉強法を紹介するだけでなく、
・なぜ外国語を勉強するか？・どんな言語を勉強したらいいか
・ロンブ・カトーさんの外国語勉強法を例をあげてわかりやすく説明
・ことばの魅力　・通訳の世界
などなど、興味深いです。

訳もすばらしく、訳者は米原さんという日本屈指のロシア語通訳の方です。

　この本、勉強にいきづまっているひとにはバイブルみたいなものです。精神安定剤みたいなものかもしれない。
当たり前といえば当たり前のアドバイスですが、ロンブーさんがいうからこそ説得力があるんです。
　語学をやっている人は読んでいくとよいと思います。
シュリーマンの「古代への情熱」と共通したものがあります。

今日色々なところで外国語学習の重要さを耳にしますが、どれもこれも妙に実利的で嫌になりませんか。仕事のため、将来のため、というようなことばかりが母国語ではない外国語を勉強するきっかけだなんてつまらないと思いませんか。外国語を勉強する楽しさと素敵さを手軽な文庫で教えてくれるこの一冊を読めばきっと、そんなけちな了見から解放されて、外国語の深淵で素晴らしい世界にすんなりと入っていくことが出来るでしょう。ハウツーものではなく、研究書でもなく、エッセイとしてお楽しみ下さい。
