　Georg Simmelに関する和書は意外にも沢山出版されているが、Simmelの哲学観を理解するにあたってこの本は非常に面白い。各種身近な事象や物質から社会まで様々な現実問題に対して哲学的な観念を抱いて説くスタイルは興味深い。取り分け、自分が面白かったのは額縁に関する考察で、社会的構造にも応用出来る様な考察は共感を覚える。大学のゼミでSimmelの文献を扱った際には、バンダリズム等の社会的現象にもSimmelの哲学観念を拡張したりも出来、現代社会にも非常に価値ある哲学を学ぶ事が出来よう。
　一方問題もあって、1つには和訳してある為に本来別の語を用いている2概念が同様の表現で書かれている箇所が多々ある点、1つにはSimmelの主張の中で矛盾する相反主張が提示されている点などが挙げられる。彼の独自の世界観を更に深くまで読み進めるには、やはり原著で読む必要性は否めない。

このような本を読むのは、まさに精神の饗宴である。本のあっちこっちに、知の宝石が散らばっており、それに触れるたびであっと言わされる。ジンメルは女性、貨幣、大都市、橋、扉、モードなど身近の物事を、哲学的に本質まで追求していて、その眼の付け所のよさには圧倒される。また、今日に書かれておかしくないような内容を100年前に書いたということから、いかにジンメルがモダンな哲学者だったかのがよくわかる。本書の主なる線は、葛藤である。ジンメルは「主観と客観」「部分と全体」「表層と深層」「形態と素材、美と倫理」「よそ者と土着民」の観点から、これについて述べている。個人的な意見だが、まず最後の「近代文化における貨幣」を読み、その次に鈴木さんの解説を読んで、本文に進んだほうがいいと思う。
