　ベンヤミンについては、アレントの「暗い時代の人々」で知って以来、気になっていた。この著作も前から手元にあったが、なかなか読み進められずにいた。独特の難解さがあったし、著者がどの方向を向いて書いているのかが分かりにくいところが少なからずあったからだ。最近また読み返してみると、何かしっくり内容が入ってきた。カントやヘーゲルのドイツ観念論哲学、マルクス、ジンメル、ルカーチと、ベンヤミンが考える際の前提にしていて、そこに近づいたり、離れたりしながら独自の文筆を形成している先行テキストとの緊張関係を想起することで、ベンヤミンの思索は明瞭になってくるのでは、と今は思っている。

　この「コレクション」はフーコーやジンメルなど他の著者のコレクションと違って、現在四冊、編者の浅井健二郎氏の構想によると全六冊にわたる主要著書の収録を目指しているようで、この第一巻は「近代の意味」と題し、冒頭の「言語一般及び人間の言語について」が全体の基調を前奏し、続いて「ゲーテの『親和力』」、「アレゴリーとバロック悲劇」の二つが収録され、次にはベンヤミンの文体変化後の「パリ　−　ボードレール」をめぐる三つの叙述、第五セクションではシュルレアリズム・ブレヒト・写真・「複製技術時代の芸術作品」が、最後のセクションでは「歴史の概念について」が掲載されていて、編者が主張しているように、確かにひとつの共通性を見出すことが出来る。

　その共通性はやはり、冒頭の「言語一般及び人間の言語について」に強く含まれているのだろうと思う。そこで著者は、通常誰しもが用いている言葉による言語のほかに、「自らの精神的本質を表現において伝達する」対象を全て言語としてとらえ、事物の言語、仕組みとはたらきを見出すことの出来るものを言語をして想起する。いわゆる記号論的な思考を時代的に先取りしていて、その認識の上に、人間の言語がとらえ得ることの表象ととらえ得ないことの象徴を言語表現においてなすことの意味合いを考察している。この部分を読んでいくと、思想や批評の本質を語っているように読めて、以下の部分はここで確かめられたテーゼを個々の主題において実践しているものとして読める。

　またその際に、過去の芸術作品は当該原稿執筆当時の状況と対峙していて、現在の芸術潮流は個人の置かれた状況、社会状態や国家の情勢と対峙しているといったように、絶えず拮抗した外部と触れ合うようにして思索され記述される文章には、書き手の緊張感や読み手をとらえる求心力が横溢している。

　まだまだ完全に分かり得たとはいえないが、折に触れて読み返したい著作。

やはり、従前のベンヤミン著作集に比べて訳もこなれている。そもそもベンヤミンは難しく、ドイツ人ですら「一旦、別のドイツ語に翻訳しないと読めない」と言われるほどである。その意味ではこの新訳は非常に評価できる。但し、アンソロジーの形になっている点で、選択から落ちている重要な論文があることが残念である。「ドイツ悲劇の根源」の序論「認識批判的序章」は、ベンヤミンの中核をなす思想が記述されており、これはぜひとも入れて欲しかった。いずれしろ、ベンヤミンを読むのであれば、是非手元に欲しい一冊である。

ベンヤミン著作集を読んだ世代には、このコンパクトな３巻の著作集は歯がゆいばかりに要領よくまとまっている。晶文社版はいわば野村修全集とでいえる野村翻訳節が通底している、好村節もあるが。ドイツ語版の読めるものには、この晶文社版の印象はややつらい。ベンヤミンのドイツ語は明晰だし、スピードも速い。その文章的な魅力を的確に訳しだした浅井さんの訳は、お奨めである。新訳が出たことを喜びたい。
