東京の成り立ちを地形・歴史的視点でとても丁寧に解説し、歩き回りたい気持ちにさせてくれる本。著者は、一見歴史はもう残っていないかのように見える現在の東京からでも江戸時代の都市を読み取れるとわかりやすく主張している。現在の東京の繁華街に通ずる部分もあり、おすすめです。

　内容は「東京の空間人類学」というよりむしろ「江戸からの空間人類学」といった具合で、江戸>明治>昭和末現在の具体的な街の在り方の推移が中心となっている。そしてこれは人類学というより地学的な部類に属するだろう。

　結果としてそこに街並みが広がっているのではなく、それは長い歴史で必然的かつ因果的に異化を続けた軌跡であり、今もなお「経過」であるということが、別に本書に記述されているわけではないが漠然と感じられた。

　近代の東京の地理的な意味合い(なぜ東側は下町や年寄りが多いのか、西は風俗店や若者が多いのかといったようなこと)を期待して本書を手にした俺としては満足いかない内容だったが、本書のある意味穿った東京をはじめとする都市の見解やそれについての表現はな!かなか面白く、2003年現在読んでもそれらに対しては「古い」などといった感覚はしない。

江戸時代当時の状況を踏まえて、東京の都市の骨格（道路や土地利用）の成り立ちを、解き明かした、正に目からウロコの１冊です。建築・都市が専門の研究者である著者ならではの視点で、東京の都市構造にメスを入れています。例えば、道路の延長線上に「富士山」が見えるように配置された千代田区番町の例など、ふだん我々が地下鉄でしか異動せずその全体像をあまり意識しなくなった都市東京の街づくりの深層を、しっかりしたリサーチを基に明らかにしています。
