本書はオムニバスである。冒頭に載っている、本の題名にもなっている「ヴェニスの商品の資本論」は実に面白い。社会科学系の本を読んで、心の底から面白い！と思ったのは、私はこれが初めてである。シェイクスピア『ベニスの商人』を読み解きながら、貨幣、利子、ヨーロッパ社会におけるユダヤ人の役割を縦横に語っている。経済学の素人に貨幣のもつ興味深い役割を教え、西洋史の素人にヨーロッパ社会におけるユダヤ人の役割を教えてくれる本である。もちろん、文学的分析という尺度においても一級品である。一言で言えば、様々な読み方を許容する本である。私自身は、なぜアラブ社会においてユダヤ人が嫌われるのか、その謎を解くヒントも本書に隠されていると思った。それにしても、分析の道具がマルクス!!とは。マルクスを援用してこのような立派な分析が出来るのなら、だれも見向きもしなくなったけれども、やはりマルクスの著作は読んでおかなければいけないという気にもなってくる。

本書は岩井克人の雑誌連載に新たな書下ろしを加え一冊にまとめたものである。個々の議論は確かに未だ萌芽の域を脱していない。しかし、だからこそ読む者に様々なインスピレーションを与えてくれる。特に「帰ってきたマルクス｣は後の岩井の代表作「貨幣論｣の息吹を感じさせる。

　「悪平等は不平等」という物言いがある。当今、「ワーキングプア」「格差社会」などの言葉が日本列島に氾濫しているわけだが、本当に「悪平等」は「悪いこと」なのだろうか。私には、勤労者（世帯）の困窮化や「勝ち組」「負け組」といった所得格差の拡大をみるとき、本書所収の「マクロ経済学の『蚊柱』理論」なども踏まえると、「悪平等」の方が「不平等」よりはるかにマシだと考えてしまうのだが…。

　さて当書は、大きく「資本主義」「貨幣と媒介」「不均衡動学」及び「書物」の４つの諸論稿から構成されているが、F.ブローデルなども援用し、本書の表題ともなっている「ヴェニスの商人の資本論」など、資本主義を考究したエッセーのキーワードの一つが「差異」である。つまり、資本主義とは、資本の無限増殖を目的とし、利潤の絶えざる獲得を追求していく経済機構であるけれども、その利潤の源泉は「差異」である、という。

　岩井教授は、利潤は時間・空間等の「差異」から生まれる、と説く。それ故、たとえば「産業資本主義とは、生産手段を独占している資本家が、労働力の価値と労働の生産物の価値とのあいだの差異を媒介して利潤を生み出す経済機構」（P.58）と措定するならば、前述した現代日本の状況は、マルクス的な意味で絶対的あるいは相対的剰余価値の創出強化、まさに初期産業資本主義段階への“回帰現象”といえなくはないだろう…。

　他方、岩井教授は不均衡動学理論のイントロ的解説といえる前掲の論述の中で、特に市場原理主義派の経済学者から目の敵にされている「貨幣賃金の下方硬直性」との関連において「目から鱗が落ちる」論理も展開している。だが、これは紙幅の関係で別の機会に触れてみたい。ともあれ、経済思想に多少とも関心があるならば、脱構築的経済学の旗手といえる岩井教授のこの著作は、是非とも押さえておきたい書物の１冊であろう。
