著者の他の著書と比べると、本書は（新書という事もあるだろうが）かなり平易な文章で書かれ、大変分かりやすい。そのため、著者の提唱している「生命学」について学ぶのに最適と言えるのではないか。
本書を読めば分かる事だが、「生命学」の射程範囲は広く、様々な問題に果敢に挑んでいる。
第三章の「リサイクル文明の逆説」は「リサイクル＝善」といった単純な考え方では、近未来に「リサイクル型南北構造」になり得るといった可能性を提示し、第五章の「専門の囲いの中で」では、脳死身体の利用と言える事が一般大衆にはほんとんど知られていない事実が書かれている。
本書を読み進めていくにつれ、著者のいう「文明と欲望の共犯関係」が見え始め、それについてより深く考えていこうといった所で本書は終わっているが、著者最新の著書『生命学に何ができるか 脳死・フェミニズム・優生思想』を読むことでその先が見えてくるだろう。

薄い本の割には内容はしっかりとしています。生命倫理についてまったく知らない方にはお勧めかもしれません。大体の大枠をつかむことができるかと思います。

人間の<生命>をに潜むエゴをキーワードに現代文明を洞察し、文明批判から諸問題の解決を志向する斬新な着眼の書。

　単なる世間受けの良い軽薄な内容の羅列ではなく、今後も更に複雑化して行かざるを得ない現代社会意が抱える問題の解決に確固たる視点を与えてくれるかもしれないと期待したくなる提言をしている本です。

ただし、この本一冊まるまるが著者の提言とその妥当性を記述しているだけのように思えてしまうのが残念。
