小泉 八雲
1850‐1904。ギリシアのイオニア諸島のレフカダ島生まれ。父はアイルランド人の軍医補。母はギリシア人。ヨーロッパ、アメリカを経て、1890年来日。同年、小泉節子と結婚。のち帰化し、小泉八雲と改名。『日本の面影』『心』『怪談』など日本人の内面をつづった名作を残した

三重県尾鷲市生まれ。東京育ち。早稲田大学社会科学部・大学院教授(比較文学・文化)。国際言語文化研究所所長(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

これまでにハーンの本は(特に『怪談』は)幾つもの邦訳が出て来たし、既に定評のある味わい深い名訳もあるのに、また新訳かと思って読んでみたのだが、最初の一篇を読み終える頃には、それまでの他の訳のことなど頭から綺麗に吹き飛んでしまった。とにかく訳がうつくしい。「美しい」ではなく「うつくしい」と書きたくなる程うつくしい。基本的にですます調で、著者が読者にやさしく語り掛ける様な文体を採っているのだが、これがまたえもいわれぬ独特の雰囲気を作り出している。単に文章を置き換えるのではなく、そこで新たな作品へと深化させてくれる翻訳と云うものは本当に稀なものだが、本書は間違い無くそうしたタイプの名訳だと言える。

収録作品の選定も実にいい。ハーンの再話文学が『怪談』でひとつの頂点を成すのは確かだとしても、それに至るまでの、負けず劣らず素晴らしい昔話の数々は得てして文庫本等では軽視されがちなものである。本書ではテーマ別に分けて比較的広い年代の作品を集めて来ているのだが、ハーンの、人と世界の向こうに永遠を見る眼差しが素直によく解る構成になっている。ポリネシア、フィンランド、中国、インド等々、ハーンが再編した世界各地の神話伝説と云う、恐らくは一般の読者は知らないであろうジャンルが手軽に読める様になったのも実に嬉しい。ハーンの文学が『聊斎志異』や『千一夜物語』に匹敵する業績だと云うことが、本書を読めば実感出来るだろう。
