外国作品は翻訳によってその作品の雰囲気を伝えられるかどうかが決まってしまう。この中野康司訳は、わかりやすさではほかの翻訳に群を抜いているが、作品の雰囲気や趣を伝えるという点では劣る。と言うのも、わかりやすさを心がけるあまり、意訳しすぎて、原作者の言い回しなどが伝わってこないのだ。私は同じ中野でも中野好夫訳（新潮文庫「自負と偏見」）を買って読み、こちらは図書館で借りて、わからない部分を読んだ。
ジェーン・オースティンの作品は「Ｅｍｍａ」を一番最初に読んだが、この作品にしろ、エマにしろ、非常によく構成が練られていて、一見関係ないような話があとになって意味を持ってくることがよくある。それだけ伏線が多様に張られていることだと思うが、そこがオースティン作品のおもしろさの一つだろう。

古い作品なので物語の単調さはあるものの、退屈せずに楽しめるのはやはり原作の力でしょうか。翻訳も現代的で、いわゆる「翻訳調」ではないので読みやすいのですが、どうしても敬語の使い方に違和感があります。敬語を正しく使わないと、登場人物の身分や時代感覚などを表せないと思います。高貴な人の言葉とは思えない言い回しが気になります。

5.0 out of 5 stars やっぱりちくま文庫の日本語訳, 2004/4/26
この本を読もうと思った時に各文庫版のイントロ部を読み比べました。このちくま文庫版は一番高価だけれど、日本語訳が現代文としてとても自然で、かつ適度に整理された文法表現の為読み易かったので、思い切って購入しました。おかげで難なく、息も付かず物語にぐいぐい引き込まれ、あっという間に読了できました。このお話は各登場人物の長所、欠点、美徳と変てこな性格がそれぞれ豊かに描写されていて、まるで読みながら映画を見ているかのように想像が容易なのです。読みながら主人公と同じようにジェインを応援し、コリンズ氏に吹き出し、（女性ならば）ダーシーに惚れちゃうと思います。
