坂本 衛
温泉ライター。1935年大阪府吹田市生まれ。1987年国鉄改革を機に、国鉄大阪車掌区を退職、現会社員。10代より鉄道模型製作に興味を持ち、作品はすべて素材からの手作りという主義を貫く。1979年椎間板ヘルニア手術後の療養に青森県津軽湯の沢温泉を訪れてから温泉の魅力に目ざめ、温泉めぐりを始める。現在の温泉入湯数1042カ所。とくに迷湯、珍湯、奇湯が興味の対象(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　ガイドブックに載っていない温泉マークを５万分の１地図に見つけては現地調査。しかも貧乏自認だから根本的に１８きっぷとバスか徒歩。おまけにそのバスも１日１往復のみだったりするから、到着もままならない。綿密な行動計画、そして現地の人に尋ね尋ねて探し当てた先にあったものは・・・あるものは畑の中のベビーバス、あるものは掘っ立て小屋、あるものは個人宅、あるものは浴槽がなくお湯が流れるままになっている・・そんなところで！囲いがなくても人がいないタイミングに裸になって入ってしまう、浴槽がなくてもお湯をタオルにしみこませて肩から絞りかける。羞恥心が欠落しているのではなく、入湯数をカウントしたいが故の思いきりである。偶然見つけて笑いをこらえる通行人もいて、読んでいる人も笑ってしまう。好む温泉は「３Ｋ-臭い、汚い、暗い」と言っている。大阪生まれ故か、このあたりのユーモアのセンスは筆者の生まれつきのものなのだろう。　

　そうやってかせいだ温泉が、２０年で９００。囲いなしはさすがにまねできないし、個人や会社所有の風呂に入れてくれとは頼みにくいが、尋ねてみたい湯もたくさんある。村の共同湯はほとんどが混浴で、生活の臭いがある。９７年に出版された当時、昭和の時代に訪れた湯の現存を確認してある。

昨今、温泉ブームなのだという。都心でもそこら中から温泉が湧いているのだそうな。だがしかし、ちょっと待ってほしい。最近の温泉といったら、地下数千メートルから無理矢理ボーリングしてポンプアップしたものばかりじゃないか！そんなマガイモノの温泉とは対極にある昔からのひなびた（！）温泉を自分の足で訪ね歩いたのが本書である。実際に著者ひとりで歩いたものばかりだから、当時とは佇まいが変わっているところもあるかもしれない。でもそれもまた一興。本書の魅力は温泉そのものというより、温泉を探して訪ね歩くまさにそのプロセスそのものにあるのだ。それと同時に、気持ちのいい読後感はどうしたわけだろう。著者の飄々とした生き方に憧れるのは私ひとりではあるまい。

温泉ブームと言われて久しいが、紹介されるのは有名な所かそうでなければ『秘湯』と呼ばれる隠れた温泉なのだが、テレビなどで大々的に報じられては秘湯もくそもない。
そんな温泉に飽きた人にはこの本で紹介されている、「こんなところに！｣｢これが？｣と思わせる超秘湯がおすすめ。

中には地元の人も知らない温泉が載っていたりと著者のその捜索力には脱帽してしまう。
