実相寺 昭雄
昭和12年東京生まれ。中国青島で育つ。青島での幼少期に金森馨(のちに舞台美術家)と出会い、大きな影響を受ける。早稲田大学卒業後、TBS入社。テレビ演出部を経て、映画部に転属、円谷プロへ出向。「ウルトラマン」などの特撮作品を監督。その後、フリーとなる。映画、舞台、CM、文筆など幅広い分野で活動している。現在、東京芸術大学演奏芸術センター教授(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ウルトラマンファン、あるいは実相寺ファンは黙っていても買うだろうから、それ以外の方に届くよう祈りながら書いている。

最近、昭和30年代ブームで、関連するさまざまな本が出版されている。当時の風景写真や商品写真はもちろん貴重で一読者にとってもありがたいのだが、いかんせん文章がいけない。「空気感」とでもいおうか、そういったものが全然伝わってこないのだ。本書は違う。膨大な知識と経験を有しながらそれをおくびにも出さないで、一気に読ませる力を持っている。今それだけの力を持った書き手は、残念ながら小説プロパーの人にはひとりもいない（もちろん私見です）。著者と、かつてTBSで同僚であった久世光彦だけである。両者の作品に漂う昭和の匂いはホンモノである。

シーボーズ、ガヴァドン、スカイドン。
実相寺監督が作った作品って、敵意のない怪獣が多いのですねぇ･･･としみじみ。
イラストが多くて、これはカラーで見たかったと思う反面、テクストと併せて考えればモノクロの方がいいのかもしれません。

　ウルトラマン・シリーズのロケ現場をめぐるタイムトラベルは、「東京オリンピックが終わり、新幹線が開通し、東京の各地で敗戦の余燼が消えかかろうとしていたころ」から始まる。それは、「高速道路が東京を醜く変え、堀と水を抹殺し」はじめたころ、「高度成長時代の黎明」である。ウルトラマンや怪獣たちが活躍したのは、まさにそのような時代であった。実相時昭雄さんは、「怪獣たちは消えた風景のそのものだった、と思わずにはいられない」と書いている。（それでは、宇宙人や地底人は、いったい何だったのだろう。）──今となっては、『ウルトラマン』はある世代の幼児・少年期の記憶であり、ある時代の都市の記憶である。「過去への旅は、つらいことも甘美さと同居している」。多くの怪獣たちを倒したウルトラマンは、はかりしれない悲哀を胸にひめていたに違いない。
